1st semester

The Portuguese expansion beyond what was Portugal’s natural territory began in the second quarter of the XV century and would only meet its end in 1974. That process of over half a millennium could not have been continuous and uniform, it could not have followed models or patterns, for its dynamics (from exploration to colonization), the variety of spaces and distances and the multiple conjurations and conjunctures prevented it.

Avoiding a script of the history of expansion, this seminar will look at the informed interpretation of the spatial evolution matrixes of that expansion and the global knowledge of the geographical features of the diverse geographical contexts at hand, thus potentiating cross and comparative readings about all that and the implicit culture of the territory.
Some specialists reputed in History of Expansion will participate in this seminar.

The aim of this curricular unit is to provide those who attend it with a critical approach to literature and to the images regarding the Portuguese or Portuguese-influenced (outside Europe) History of Art and Architecture, as well as the discourse around this heritage, woven by religion, politics and cultural intervention, mostly between the XIX century and our time. There will be an attempt to discuss the historicity of historiography itself, its permeability to ideology and how that affected the way we look at and intervene in heritage.

In 1539, João de Barros, the chronicle writer of the Foundation of the Portuguese Empire, wrote as justification for his grammar book that the weapons and the patterns which Portugal disseminated throughout all continents were material things which time would deal with, but the Portuguese language would remain as a testimony of such encounter. This seminar aims at analysing several Portuguese-written sources regarding the spaces reached by Portugal. It will have the idea of rewriting as central conceptual frame, and as conceptual space the concept of city as colonial text (Lévi-Strauss), or palimpsest of texts, and will cover a temporality of analysis which goes from the city as the space of foundation of the occupation; as colonial space; as a space of resistance and as forger of a new nation.

2nd semester

The purpose of this seminar it to provide a deepened contact with theoretical and methodological perspectives which are relevant for the different areas of investigation in the scope of the doctoral programme. Special attention will be given to a reflection on theories of culture, departing from concepts such as language, identity, nation, globalization, inter-cultural issues, diaspora, memory and translation, within the framework of an introduction to pre-colonial theories. Simultaneously, there will be an answer to the need for guidance regarding aspects of a practical nature connected with the methodologies of investigation in the areas of social sciences, humanities, architecture and urbanism.
